Alojzij Mavsar (February 25, 1904 - August 21, 1939)

Ana Brudar (March, 1900 - May 20, 1977)

Alojzij (Alois, Louis) Mavsar (also Mauser) was born on February 25, 1904 in the village of Šentjošt to the family of Janez Mavsar and Ana Kozoglav. He was the youngest and the last of the three brothers to come to the United States from Slovenia.

At the age of 17 Louis followed the footsteps of his older brothers, Janez and Martin. He left his little village in the spring of 1921 and would never see it again. He would never see his parents and sisters either.

Louis headed for the port of Trieste, Italy. According to the List or Manifest of Alien Passengers for the United States Immigration Officer at Port of Arrival, Alois Mavsar (not Mauser) sailed the ship Argentina from Trieste on April 29, 1921. He arrived at the port of New York on May 20, 1921.

Louis was a laborer, single, able to read and write. He left Ellis Island for Haughville, Indianapolis, where he was going to join his brother, Martin Mauser, who resider at 960 Haugh Street. At that time Louis was 5'6" tall. He had fair complexion, and brown eys and hair.

On April 9, 1923 Louis Mauser married Ana Brudar (also Anna Brudder) in Marion County, Indianapolis. Anna was an immigrant from Ljubljana, Slovenia. She was born in March of 1900.

Louis and Ana lived across the street from Martin and Josephine Mauser at 957 Haugh Street. Louis worked until he died at the Federal Foundry, south of Washington Street. He made molds. His son, Tony, believes the dust and other elements caused him to have tuberculosis. This work killed many, and also caused black lung disease. Louis was a real hard worker and used to work 10-12 hours per day.

Louis worked in Indianapolis during the week although the family lived on a farm in Morgantown. He returned home for the weekends. One time he commuted from Indianapolis to the farm (40 miles) on the top of a truck. He developed pneumonia and, according to his son, Tony, that is when his health problems began.

During the Great Depression Louis and Ana started working on their citizenship papers.

During the depression many people went hungry and stood with their buckets in long soup lines. Louis made 10 cents per hour working at the federal foundry, so they lived better than most people. His children worked too. They would earn one penny for one pound of picked up beans and peas.

In 1937 Louis, Ana and the children moved from Haughville to Morgantown, Indiana, where they lived on a farm. In March of 1939, when Louis became ill, the family left the farm and moved back to the same house at 957 Haugh Street, Indianapolis. Louis went to the Sunnyside Hospital for Tuberculosis in Indianapolis where he died from tuberculosis on August 21, 1939.

Aloiz (Louis) Mauser was buried on August 24, 1939 in Indianapolis at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Section C, Lot 90. After Louis died Ana re-married.

Ana died in Indianapolis in her son Tony’s home on 957 Haugh Street on May 20, 1977. Ana was buried in Linton, Indiana.
